I was a Netflix junkie while I was out of work. As I watched documentaries to fill the time, I came across Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things. Life changing stuff. Reducing the amount of stuff I already had in my home would bring me happiness? Yes, please! I began to reach for any material I could find on the topic of minimalism. Got myself a copy of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo, and subscribed to Facebook pages of Becoming Minimalist, No Sidebar, and of course The Minimalists. Here are 5 reasons why you need minimalism in your life now.
Reason 1: You’re Overwhelmed.
Are you so overwhelmed that it’s making you miserable? The amount of things a person owns has an overwhelming effect. Did you know that research shows using minimalism actually reduces that overwhelming feeling you have as you walk into a room in your home? Reducing the amount of stuff you have will actually bring a sense of calm.
Reason 2: You’re Tired ALL.THE.TIME.
More than tired, really. You spend all your time trying to clean a house that you just cleaned YESTERDAY! How is it possible that all these toys, and mail, and dishes can pile up just 24 hours later? Well, cause you have way too much of it, that’s why. If you reduced the amount of items, there would be less items to care for. And more time to rest.
Reason 3: You Can’t. You’re Too Busy.
Ever turn down a great offer to do something fun because you were too busy? Laundry. Laundry was always my excuse. I always left laundry for the weekends. My girlfriends would call to meet for lunch and I would be dying to go but, “how would I finish all the laundry?” Really? Minimalize that wardrobe. It was one of the first things I reduced and I’m so thankful I did. No more laundry weekends.
Reason 4: You’re Broke.
We get so addicted to consumerism. New clothes, the latest tech, the most posh house decor, and big ticket items like that fancy SUV in your driveway. When we throw all our money at the latest and the greatest thing, those things that make us happy and are forgotten about a few days later; we’re broke. And we don’t even remember what we bought. If that money is burning a hole in your pocket, buy an experience. It’s something you’ll remember you did and it won’t lose its appeal.
Reason 5: You’re Lonely
Remember those people? I think we called them our husband, wife, son, or daughter? Yeah, they live in your house but you don’t connect. Maybe when you look up from your cell phone and look around the family room, everyone is on a device? When it’s Saturday, and since there is no more laundry weekends and you have the time, do something with each other. There’s so much lost time to make up for.
Do you want calmness, rest, time, money, and love? Minimalism can bring that back to you. Stop and look at your life right now. Are you any of those 5 Reasons? I know I was all of them and more. I’m still at the beginning parts of minimalism and I can already see a difference in my life. If you are searching for a starting point to regain some kind of peace in your life, start here.
